Senior Airman Daniel R. “Danny” Sanchez was born on August 30, 1987, in El Paso, Texas. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force on June 27, 2006.

Following Basic Military Training, Danny entered the Air Force combat control pipeline, a training course of roughly two years that includes air traffic control, airborne, free-fall, combat diver and survival training, and that only a fraction of candidates complete. He earned the scarlet beret of the combat controller and reported to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida, where he was assigned to Blue Team. As a combat controller he was trained to deploy with special operations ground forces to control airspace, call in air strikes and establish assault zones in hostile territory.

In 2010 Danny deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, attached to a special operations team in Oruzgan Province. On his final mission, he and his team, alongside Afghan National Army partners, were tasked with providing security for national election polling sites in the vicinity of Kajran District. On September 16, 2010, shortly after the team inserted, an insurgent who had infiltrated the Afghan partner force opened fire, and Danny was mortally wounded. He was 23 years old.

Danny was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for his actions in ground combat from August 4 to September 16, 2010. His decorations also include the Purple Heart, the Air Force Combat Action Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, along with the Combat Control Badge, the Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge and the Combat Diver Badge.

On April 8, 2024, the Special Tactics community and Danny’s family gathered at Hurlburt Field to dedicate the auditorium of the Special Tactics Training Squadron’s Schroeder Building as Danny Sanchez Hall. A plaque bearing his scarlet beret, his Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals and his name now greets every new generation of Special Tactics Airmen. “This dedication ensures Danny will never be forgotten and that we will always keep his family close,” said Colonel Matthew Psilos, commander of the 720th Special Tactics Group. “He chose to stand between the enemy and all the people he loves and respects, and every American citizen that day.” Danny is survived by his mother, Yvette Duchene, and his half-brother.

SrA Daniel R. Sanchez was killed-in-action in the vicinity of Kajran District, Afghanistan, when his team came under fire from an enemy insurgent within the Afghan National Army partner force. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor.
