Master Sergeant Kenney Bruce Wilson was born on July 12, 1968, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, to Kenneth Lee and Donnia Joyce Gibson Wilson. Raised in the mountains of western North Carolina, he found peace in the outdoors all his life. He was an avid bowhunter and fisherman who rarely traveled without fishing rods in his truck, ready for an impromptu stop at the water.

Kenney entered the Army in 1990 and gave twenty years of honorable service to his country. He earned the Green Beret and served as a Special Forces noncommissioned officer, and his career carried him to Iraq and Afghanistan. His teammates knew him as a steady professional who found his true calling in teaching, mentoring and leading soldiers.

His devotion to duty was highlighted by his work as a Special Forces multipurpose canine handler and then as Kennel Master for the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), assigned to the Operations Detachment of the Group Support Battalion. As the operations sergeant for the kennels, he was responsible for the health, welfare and care of thirteen soldiers and their K-9 partners, and he poured his energy and expertise into developing both the handlers and their dogs. He was known as a leader who put the needs of his team and his animals above his own.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with silver oak leaf cluster, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, the Parachutist Badge and the Special Forces Tab.

Above all, Kenney was a devoted husband, a loving father, a dependable teammate and a loyal friend. Generous with his time, he was always the first to lend a hand on a friend’s project, and he placed the well-being of his family at the center of his life.

On July 2, 2012, at the age of 43, Kenney lost his battle with PTSD, in what was recognized as a line of duty death. His funeral was held at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Chapel at Fort Bragg. For too long, the nature of his passing overshadowed his two decades of service; his family and his brothers in arms now make sure that his name is known and that his life and service receive the honor they deserve. “You were the absolute love of my life and I was the luckiest woman ever to be loved by you,” his wife, Melissa, wrote.

Kenney is survived by his wife, Melissa; his sons, Joshua and Gabriel; his daughter, Holly; his stepson, Addison; his stepdaughter, McKenzie; his mother, Joyce; his brother, Bobby; and his sister, Patricia.
